Rugged, classic, beautiful, and quietly unlike anything else

The Rattle's Tail is an Italian full grain leather strap that finishes in rope, and it is a striking looking thing. The body is broad, flat and supple, smooth under the fingers, warm against the neck, and it darkens into a deep, glossy, hard earned patina as you carry it. The tails are rope: lean, springy, tightly braided, soft at the lug, finished with bright polished silver rings. Leather where you carry it, rope where it bends. Classic in its materials, rugged in its build, handsome from across a room, and different enough that people ask about it.

Two materials, one strap.

Rich, substantial, slow ageing leather across the shoulder, where you want the weight spread wide and a hide that gets better looking the longer you carry it. Slim, soft, tightly braided rope at the tails, where it lies flat against the body and swings freely with the camera. Rugged and refined at once, classic in feel, unusual in shape. The Rattle's Tail is for photographers who want both in the same strap.

  • Body. Italian full grain leather, broad and flat, cut and finished by hand.
  • Tails. Rope, joined into the leather body and run through to the hardware at each end.
  • Hardware. Polished silver split ring at each end. A small lug version is available for bodies with a narrow lug.
  • Length. 30, 40, 45, 50 or 55 inches, 76 to 140 cm.
  • Colour. Black with Red Accent, Stealth, Monochrome, or Red Rattle, which runs red rope tails on black leather.
  • Made. Handcrafted in Miami, by photographers for photographers.
  • Italian full grain leather. Supple, dense, beautifully grained, and full grain through the whole body, so the surface is the top of the hide. It marks, it darkens, it goes glossy at the fold, and it ends up looking like the strap you carried rather than the strap you bought.
  • Rope tails. Lean, springy and tightly braided. Soft against the camera, slim enough to sit flat at the lug, and loose from the first day.
  • Polished split rings. Bright silver, polished to a clean shine, at both ends.
  • The strap. Rattle's Tail Italian Leather Camera Strap in the colour and length you choose, with the attachment fitted at both ends.
  • Pouch. To store and carry your strap.
  • Leather camera lug cover. One extra, so you have a spare.
  • Cameras with strap lugs. Leica, Fuji, Sony, Nikon and Canon bodies that take a split ring.
  • Small lug cameras. Choose Split Ring for Small Lug for bodies with a narrow lug, such as the Fuji X100 series and the Ricoh GR.
  • How you wear it. Around the neck, across the body or over one shoulder. Pick the length by how you carry, not by your height.
  • Cleaning. Wipe the leather with a dry cloth. Brush the rope tails out if they pick up grit.
  • Wet weather. If it takes on water, let it dry away from direct heat rather than near it, because heat is what hardens a hide.
  • Check the tails. Look over the join and the rings when you clean the strap. That is where the load sits.
  • Why put rope on a leather strap?Because the two feel different, and this strap gives you both. Leather spreads the weight across your shoulder and takes on a patina. Rope stays soft at the lug and swings with the camera. If you would rather have leather end to end, the Helliot and the Slacker are exactly that.
  • Will the rope mark my camera? No. The rope is soft and sits flat against the body, and the lug cover in the box goes between the hardware and the camera.
  • How is this different from the Classic Rope straps? It is the other way around. The Classic Rope straps are rope through the body with leather ends. The Rattle's Tail is leather through the body with rope tails.
  • Which length should I pick?30 and 40 inches sit high on the chest. 45 and 50 inches are the usual choice for cross body carry. 55 inches is for carrying low, or over a coat.
