Black gator, blacked out end to end.

The Classic Padded Flat Rope Strap is made for photographers who want a cleaner carry with more comfort through the neck and shoulder. Black Swamp runs that build dark: a black gator pattern leather on the pad, with black rings as the standard hardware rather than a polished ring.

The flat rope profile sits closer to the body than a round strap, so the camera stays steady and balanced while still moving naturally when you shoot. The padded section adds support where you feel the weight most, which is what makes the difference on long walks, travel days and everyday carry.

Five fixed lengths, seven ways to attach it, and nothing on the strap that catches the light. Made in Miami.

  • Lengths. Five. 30 inches (76 cm), 40 inches (102 cm), 45 inches (114 cm), 50 inches (127 cm) and 55 inches (140 cm). Fixed, not adjustable, measured lug to lug.
  • Strap width. 5/8 inch, flat rope body.
  • Pad. 1.5 inches wide, 12 inches long.
  • Weight. 85 grams at 30 inches, rising to 93 grams at 55 inches.
  • Finish. Black Swamp, a black gator pattern leather on the padded section.
  • Hardware. Black rings as standard. The polished stainless rings are in the box as well, for anyone who wants the contrast.
  • Attachment methods. Seven. Black Split Ring, Quick Release Attachment, Hassy Clip, Multi Attachment System, Square Lug 1/2 inch Flat Webbing, Square Lug 3/8 inch Flat Webbing, and Split Ring for Small Lug.
  • Made in Miami. Cut, sewn and finished in our own shop.

The pad is where the strap earns its keep. A flat rope on its own cuts into the neck once the camera gets heavy; the padded section spreads that load across 12 inches so a full day of carrying stops registering.

  • Gator pattern leather. Italian full grain, finished in a black gator pattern. The scale texture catches light across the pad and stays dark from every angle.
  • The padded section. Chrome tanned, so it tolerates damp better than a vegetable tanned hide and stays soft without a conditioning schedule. It darkens and softens with use.
  • Strap ends. American top grain, chosen for its toughness and tight fibers, because the end is where the wear concentrates.
  • Flat rope body. Our own flat rope, 5/8 inch, which sits closer to the body than a round strap and needs no treatment in normal use.
  • Hardware. Blackout tempered steel rings as the standard fit, tempered polished stainless steel in the box alongside them.
  • Made in Miami. Cut, sewn and finished in our own shop.
  • Where the weight sitsThe padded section carries the load across the neck and shoulder rather than a cord cutting into it. It is the difference between a strap you take off at lunch and one you forget you are wearing.
  • Picking a length30 inches is neck carry, camera high on the chest. 40 and 45 sit at the hip for shoulder carry. 50 and 55 are the crossbody lengths. All five are fixed, so choose for the way you actually carry.
  • Against a black bodyBlack rings, black rope, black gator. Nothing on the strap catches the light, so the camera reads as one object rather than a body with hardware hanging off it.
  • Moving between bodiesQuick release anchors take the strap off in a second, and the Multi Attachment System carries every fitting at once for anyone running more than one camera.
  • Black Split Ring. 2 blackout tempered steel rings, 2 tempered polished stainless steel rings, 2 full grain leather anti-scratch lug covers, and 1 split ring pry tool.
  • Quick Release Attachment. 2 quick release anchors in the original sealed box, simple installation needed, and 2 tri-glide adjust buckles.
  • Hassy Clip. 2 custom clips cut for Hasselblad cameras, precision fit without split rings, and 2 tri-glide adjust buckles.
  • Multi Attachment System. 2 quick release anchors, 2 leather split ring anchors, 2 tempered polished stainless steel rings, 2 blackout tempered steel rings, 2 full grain leather anti-scratch lug covers, 1 split ring pry tool, and 2 tri-glide adjust buckles.
  • Square Lug 1/2 inch Flat Webbing. The strap ends terminate in flat webbing sized to 1/2 inch square lugs. No rings needed.
  • Square Lug 3/8 inch Flat Webbing. The same, sized to 3/8 inch square lugs.
  • Split Ring for Small Lug. 2 split rings sized for small camera lugs, 2 full grain leather anti-scratch lug covers, and 1 split ring pry tool.
  • Fits every camera. The strap body is the same for all of them. What changes is the fitting you choose at checkout.
  • Black split ring. The standard fit on Black Swamp, and the right answer for most cameras.
  • Split ring for small lug. For bodies with narrow lugs that a standard ring will not pass through.
  • Quick release anchor. For anyone who takes the strap off often or moves it between bodies.
  • Hassy clip. Cut for Hasselblad lugs, no split rings involved.
  • Square lug flat webbing. Threads straight through square lugs, in 1/2 inch or 3/8 inch width.
  • Multi Attachment System. Carries every fitting at once, for anything the others do not cover.

Wipe the leather with a dry cloth. On a gator pattern, dust settles into the scale texture, and a soft dry brush lifts it out without disturbing the finish.

If the strap takes on water, let it dry away from direct heat rather than near it, because heat is what hardens a hide. A full grain leather darkens and softens with use; that patina is the material behaving correctly, not wearing out.

The padded section is chrome tanned, so it tolerates damp better than a vegetable tanned hide and needs no conditioner on a schedule. Condition it only when it feels dry to the hand.

The strap end is American top grain and it is the part that takes the wear. Check its stitching when you clean the strap.

The rope needs no treatment. Rinse it in cool water if it picks up salt or grit, and let it air dry before rolling it away.

  • Which length should I pick? 30 inches is neck carry with the camera high on the chest. 40 and 45 sit at the hip for shoulder carry. 50 and 55 are the crossbody lengths. All are measured lug to lug and fixed, not adjustable.
  • Are the black rings included as standard? Yes. Black Swamp ships with blackout rings as the default fitting, and the polished stainless rings are in the box as well if you prefer them.
  • Which attachment should I pick? Split rings suit most cameras, and the small lug version covers bodies with narrow lugs. Quick release anchors if you swap between bodies often. The Hassy clip is cut for Hasselblad. Square lug webbing threads straight through square lugs in 1/2 inch or 3/8 inch width. The Multi Attachment System covers whatever the others do not.
  • Does the leather need conditioning? Not on a schedule. The pad is chrome tanned, so it handles damp well. Condition it only when it feels dry to the hand.
  • How heavy is it? 85 grams at 30 inches, rising to 93 grams at 55 inches. The padded section adds comfort rather than weight.
In the hand, start to finish

Shown in the film in the Outback finish. The construction, the padded section and the hardware are the same across every colourway. Made in Miami, by photographers, for photographers.
