The 7.25 mm soft release, machined in Miami
The Shutter Topper threads into the cable release socket and gives the shutter a tighter, more responsive break. A wider surface for the finger to land on, less slip, and a cleaner sense of the moment the camera answers.
Every one is machined and finished by hand, one at a time. Three are cut from solid brass: raw brass that ages with you, Black Cerakote that disappears into a black top plate, and Silver Chrome for a chrome body. Red Chrome is the exception, machined from aluminum instead for a lighter topper in a deep metallic red.
Inlaid o-ring fit. No wiggle, no twist.
Precision tolerances ensure a snug, anti-rotation fit that stays centered. The o-ring is inlaid into the body rather than stacked under it, so the topper seats flush with no extra hardware and stays where you set it.
Deeper shutter buttons. On some camera models the inlaid compression o-ring needs to be removed to allow for deeper threaded shutter buttons. You can simply use a needle to poke out the compression o-ring.
- Diameter. 7.25 mm.
- Height. 5.85 mm.
- Weight. 200 mg in brass.
- Material. Brass, except Red Chrome, which is aluminum.
- Finishes. Solid Brass, Black Cerakote, Silver Chrome, Red Chrome.
- Fit. Inlaid o-ring. Nothing else to add, nothing to tighten down.
- Mount. Threaded cable release socket in the shutter button.
- Made. Machined and hand finished in Miami.
- Sold as. A single topper, or a pair.
Inlaid o-ring.
The o-ring sits in a groove cut into the body, not stacked underneath it. The topper seats flush against the top plate and the fit stays snug and centered, with no rotation once it is set.
No wiggle, no twist.
Precision tolerances do the work. Nothing rattles loose in the bag, and nothing needs retightening between frames.
A surface your finger finds.
Wider than the shutter button alone, with a subtle grip that reduces slip. The press becomes something you feel rather than something you aim at.
Machined, then finished by hand.
One at a time, in our own shop in Miami. The small size is what makes it hard. There is no room for a tolerance to be off.
Small on purpose.
At 7.25 mm across, 5.85 mm tall and 200 mg in brass, it reads as part of the camera rather than an accessory bolted to it. You add the feel without adding anything you can notice on the scale.
- Solid Brass. Raw and uncoated, with the warm glow that pairs with your favorite Owlkrown straps. It ages with you, taking on a patina that no two photographers will wear the same way.
- Black Cerakote. A thin ceramic coating baked onto the same brass body for a deep matte black that disappears against a black camera top plate. Hard wearing and scratch resistant, it holds its finish through years of thumb contact.
- Silver Chrome. A bright, neutral silver laid over the same brass body. It sits flat against a chrome or silver top plate rather than drawing attention to itself.
- Red Chrome. The one that is not brass. Machined from aluminum and finished in a deep metallic red with a fine flake that catches the light, it is lighter than the other three and the only one that reads as colour before it reads as hardware.
Four finishes, one shape.
- What it needs. A threaded cable release socket in the centre of the shutter button. If your camera takes a traditional screw-in cable release, it takes a Shutter Topper.
- Leica M. The classic M bodies are the most common home for this one.
- Not sure? Look at the shutter button. A thread cut into the middle of it is the whole requirement.
- The 12 mm. If you want a larger, more pronounced surface, the Shutter Topper is also made in 12 mm.
- Solid Brass. Brass dulls as it oxidizes. Leave it and it darkens evenly, which is what most people want. Polish it and it returns to bright.
- Black Cerakote. Sealed, and it will not patina. A dry cloth is all it asks for.
- Silver Chrome. Wipe with a soft dry cloth. A barely damp one for anything stubborn, then dry it.
- Red Chrome. A coated aluminum finish, so it will not patina. A soft dry cloth, and nothing stronger.
- Skip the solvents. No polishes or abrasives on the coated finishes. They mark what they are meant to clean.
- What does a soft release actually do?It gives the shutter a wider, closer surface to press. The break feels tighter and more predictable, and your finger slips less, which matters most at slow speeds and on a camera you shoot one handed.
- Will it come loose? No. The o-ring is inlaid into the body and the tolerances are cut for an anti-rotation fit, so it stays snug and centered instead of backing out in the bag.
- Do I need anything else to fit it?No. It threads straight into the cable release socket. There is no washer, no adhesive and no tool.
- Will the brass one change colour?Yes, and that is the point. Raw brass is left uncoated and develops a patina with handling. Coloration varies naturally from one piece to the next. Black Cerakote is sealed and stays as it is.
- Which finish for a black camera?Black Cerakote disappears into a black top plate. Solid Brass does the opposite and reads as a deliberate accent against black.
- How much does it weigh?200 mg in brass, and less again in the aluminum Red Chrome. The 12 mm is 500 mg in aluminum and 3 grams in brass, so this is the lightest Shutter Topper we make.
- 7.25 mm or 12 mm?The 7.25 mm sits closer to the camera and reads as part of it. The 12 mm gives a broader surface if you want more to press against.
- Why buy two?One for each body, or a spare. It is a small part and it lives on the outside of the camera.
