The 7.25 mm soft release in Red Cerakote

The Shutter Topper threads into the cable release socket and gives the shutter a tighter, more responsive break. A wider surface for the finger to land on, less slip, and a cleaner sense of the moment the camera answers.

This one is cut from solid brass and finished in Red Cerakote, a thin ceramic coating baked onto the body. It keeps the weight and the thread of the brass toppers, and adds a colour that reads as a deliberate mark on a chrome or black top plate rather than something trying to blend in.

Inlaid o-ring fit. No wiggle, no twist.

Precision tolerances ensure a snug, anti-rotation fit that stays centered. The o-ring is inlaid into the body rather than stacked under it, so the topper seats flush with no extra hardware and stays where you set it.

Deeper shutter buttons. On some camera models the inlaid compression o-ring needs to be removed to allow for deeper threaded shutter buttons. You can simply use a needle to poke out the compression o-ring.

  • Diameter. 7.25 mm.
  • Height. 5.85 mm.

  • Material. Solid brass, finished in Red Cerakote.

  • Made. Machined and hand finished in Miami.
  • Sold as. A single topper, or a pair.

Inlaid o-ring.

The o-ring sits in a groove cut into the body, not stacked underneath it. The topper seats flush against the top plate and the fit stays snug and centered, with no rotation once it is set.

No wiggle, no twist.

Precision tolerances do the work. Nothing rattles loose in the bag, and nothing needs retightening between frames.

A surface your finger finds.

Wider than the shutter button alone, with a subtle grip that reduces slip. The press becomes something you feel rather than something you aim at.

Machined, then finished by hand.

One at a time, in our own shop in Miami. The small size is what makes it hard. There is no room for a tolerance to be off.

Small on purpose.

At 7.25 mm across, 5.85 mm tall and 200 mg, it reads as part of the camera rather than an accessory bolted to it. You add the feel without adding anything you can notice on the scale.

  • Red Cerakote. A thin ceramic coating baked onto the brass body. It goes on thin enough to leave the knurling and the tolerances exactly as machined, and it comes out a deep red that shifts with the light rather than sitting flat.
  • Hard wearing. Cerakote was built for surfaces that get handled. It resists scratches and holds its colour through years of thumb contact, which is the only thing a soft release ever really has to survive.
  • Brass underneath. The body and the thread are solid brass, so this topper has the same weight and the same bite in the socket as the uncoated one. The colour is the only thing that changed.
  • Against a chrome body. Red on a silver top plate is the loudest this accessory gets, and it is meant to be. On a black body it reads darker and closer to the camera.

One finish, made to be seen.

  • What it needs. A threaded cable release socket in the centre of the shutter button. If your camera takes a traditional screw-in cable release, it takes a Shutter Topper.
  • Leica M. The classic M bodies are the most common home for this one.
  • Not sure? Look at the shutter button. A thread cut into the middle of it is the whole requirement.
  • The 12 mm. If you want a larger, more pronounced surface, the Shutter Topper is also made in 12 mm.
  • Red Cerakote. Sealed, and it will not patina. A soft dry cloth is all it asks for.
  • Anything stubborn. A barely damp cloth, then dry it. Nothing stronger.
  • Skip the solvents. No polishes or abrasives on a coated finish. They mark what they are meant to clean.
  • The thread. Keep it clean and seat it by hand. It needs no tool and no adhesive.
  • What does a soft release actually do?It gives the shutter a wider, closer surface to press. The break feels tighter and more predictable, and your finger slips less, which matters most at slow speeds and on a camera you shoot one handed.
  • Will it come loose? No. The o-ring is inlaid into the body and the tolerances are cut for an anti-rotation fit, so it stays snug and centered instead of backing out in the bag.
  • Do I need anything else to fit it?No. It threads straight into the cable release socket. There is no washer, no adhesive and no tool.
  • Will the red fade or patina? No. Cerakote is a sealed ceramic coating, so it stays the colour you bought. The raw brass toppers are the ones that change with handling.
  • Is it the same body as the brass one?Yes. Solid brass, same 7.25 mm shape, same thread. The Cerakote is a coating on top of it.
  • How much does it weigh?200 mg, the same as the other brass toppers in this size.
  • 7.25 mm or 12 mm?The 7.25 mm sits closer to the camera and reads as part of it. The 12 mm gives a broader surface if you want more to press against.
  • Why buy two?One for each body, or a spare. It is a small part and it lives on the outside of the camera.
