Two metals, ten finishes, one shape
The Owlkrown Shutter Topper delivers a tighter, more responsive shutter feel, giving you greater accuracy with every press. Subtle grip and refined tactility reduce finger slip and add confidence when every press counts.
Choose brass or aluminum, then choose the finish. Precision machined and finished by hand, one at a time, in our own shop in Miami.
Inlaid o-ring fit. No wiggle, no twist.
Precision tolerances ensure a snug, anti-rotation fit that stays centered. The o-ring is inlaid into the body rather than stacked under it, so the topper seats flush with no extra hardware and stays where you set it.
Deeper shutter buttons. On some camera models the inlaid compression o-ring needs to be removed to allow for deeper threaded shutter buttons. You can simply use a needle to poke out the compression o-ring.
- Diameter. 12 mm.
- Materials. 6061-T6 aluminum, or brass.
- Finishes. Ten, across the two metals.
- Weight. Aluminum 500 mg. Brass 3 g.
- Fit. Inlaid o-ring. Anti-rotation, and no extra hardware.
- Mount. Threaded cable release socket in the shutter button.
- Made. Machined and hand finished in Miami.
- Also made in. 7.25 mm, for a lower, closer profile.
Aluminum.
Machined from 6061-T6 and hard anodized. At 500 mg it is by far the lighter of the two, with a clean modern look that stays exactly as you bought it. The anodized layer is the finish, so it holds its colour rather than aging into something else.
Brass.
Three grams, so you feel it under the finger where the aluminum disappears. Heavier and more substantial to press. Left raw it ages into a vintage patina with use, so the piece ends up marked by your hands and nobody else's. Blackened or polished, it starts somewhere else and still carries the weight.
Which one.
Aluminum if you want the colour to stay put and the touch to stay light. Brass if you want mass under the finger and a finish with a history to it.
Aluminum
- Black Chrome. Flat black that disappears into a black top plate.
- Glossy Black. The same black with a shine to it, so it catches the light instead of swallowing it.
- Silver Chrome. Bright neutral silver for chrome and silver bodies.
- Red Chrome. A deep crimson, closer to oxblood than to a bright red.
- OxBlood. A strong, saturated red. The loudest of the set.
- Alpha Orange. Warm orange, the brightest accent we make.
- Safari. Olive khaki, the metal counterpart to the Safari straps.
Brass
- Solid Brass. Raw and uncoated, warm, and it will patina with handling.
- Polished Brass. The same brass brought up bright, a true gold read against black.
- Black Patina. Brass blackened by hand, so the colour sits in the metal rather than on top of it.
- What it needs. A threaded cable release socket in the centre of the shutter button. If your camera takes a traditional screw-in cable release, it takes a Shutter Topper.
- Leica M. The classic M bodies are the most common home for it.
- Not sure? Look at the shutter button. A thread cut into the middle of it is the whole requirement.
- 12 mm or 7.25 mm. The 12 mm gives a broader surface to press against. The 7.25 mm sits lower and reads as part of the camera.
- Anodized aluminum. Cleans with a dry or barely damp cloth. Skip solvents and abrasive pastes: the anodized layer is the finish, and once it is cut through it does not grow back.
- Brass. Brass dulls as it oxidizes. Leave it and it darkens evenly, which is what most people want. Polish it and it returns to bright.
- Black Patina. Hand blackened, so treat it as you would raw brass. Polishing it will lift the colour.
- What does a soft release actually do?It gives the shutter a wider, closer surface to press. The break feels tighter and more predictable, and your finger slips less, which matters most at slow speeds and on a camera you shoot one handed.
- Brass or aluminum?Aluminum is lighter and keeps its colour. Brass is heavier under the finger, and raw brass ages into a patina that is yours alone. Both are machined and hand finished the same way.
- Will it come loose? No. The o-ring is inlaid into the body and the tolerances are cut for an anti-rotation fit, so it stays snug and centered instead of backing out in the bag.
- Do I need anything else to fit it?No. It threads straight into the cable release socket. There is no washer, no adhesive and no tool.
- Will the brass change colour?Solid Brass will, and that is the point. It is left uncoated and develops a patina with handling, so coloration varies naturally from one piece to the next. Black Patina is already blackened by hand.
- Which finish for a black camera?Black Chrome and Glossy Black disappear into a black top plate. Solid Brass, Polished Brass and Alpha Orange do the opposite and read as a deliberate accent.
- How much does it weigh?Almost nothing in aluminum, 500 mg, and 3 grams in brass. The brass is the one you notice under the finger.
- 12 mm or 7.25 mm?The 12 mm gives you more to press against. The 7.25 mm sits lower and closer to the body. Both use the same thread.
